Force Restart iPhone
Force restart iPhone can help us solve some iPhone bugs, so you have also have a try.
For iPhone X/8/8plus:
Press volume up button quickly and press volume down button, then press power button and hold on until it shows Apple logo on your screen, then your iPhone will be force restarted.
For iPhone 7 or earlier:
Press power button and volume down button together and hold on until Apple logo show up on your screen, then your iPhone will be restarted.
Now you can check if your iPhone still has the issue that it shows unread messages but nothing there.
Reset All Setting on iPhone
You can also reset all settings on iPhone to make your iPhone setting returns to the default condition, it may help us fix the issue.
Step 1. Open your iPhone, go to Setting--General--Reset.
Step 2. Then you can see option “Reset All Settings”, click it.
Force Restart Message App
We can also force quit Message app to fix Message app issue, see below steps and have a try.
For iPhone 7 or earlier:
You just need to double click home button or virtual home button quickly to bring out all your background running apps, then swipe it from right to left to find the app page you need to close, and swipe it up to quit it.
For iPhone X or iPhone 8:
When you’re using latest iPhone, you can swipe up your screen and pause in between, and it will show your running apps. Now find Message app and swipe up it to quit the app.
When quit it for a while, reopen it to check if the issue still exists.
Turn off/ on iMessage
When iMessage shows gost messages, you can turn off iMessages first, then turn it on to have a try.
Step 1. Open your iPhone, go to Setting--Message, then you can see “iMessage” button, turn it off, then turn it on.
Step 2. Now check if unread messages still show up, if yes, you can delete your iMessages.
Delete All Messages on iPhone
When you don’t need your messages any more, you can delete all of them, and if you still need some of them, you can do some backup.
Step 1. Open Message app on your iPhone, click Edit, then you can choose the conversation by checking the round image icon at the beginning of the message.
Step 2. Then click “Delete” to delete those messages.
